Sectional Cross Country took place on Saturday, with the New Haven Sectional being held at Huntington University’s course. The top five teams would advance to Regionals, along with the top 15 runners from non-qualifying teams.
Concordia’s Mallory Weller wasted no time taking the lead in the girls’ race. She was ahead by a landslide approaching the 1,000 meter mark. She went on to win with a time of 17:14.2; which was about a minute faster than second place. But in second place was Mallory’s sister Daphne Weller who ran a time of 18:13.6. Concordia got the best team finish, and the top five Cadet runners all cracked the top 10. Lilly Schlicker came in fourth, Hannah Clark came in fifth, and Ellie Walters came in ninth. Homestead, Northrop, Bishop Dwenger, and Snider also finished in the top five; and will join Concordia at the New Haven Regional next week.
The boys’ race started out a little closer. New Haven’s Bryan Garcia and Homestead’s Cooper Knoblauch are neck-and-neck for first as they approached the 1,000 meter mark. But as the race went on, Knoblauch had a slim lead over Garcia. Down the stretch, Knoblauch would build that lead and win the race with a time of 15:43.7. Garcia finished second at 15:54.4. Homestead got the best team finish with six Spartans cracking the top 10. Evan McMahon finished third. Aidan Waugh took fourth. Jace Trevino took fifth. Ryan Yoder came in seventh. And Josh Rogers was eighth. Concordia, Dwenger, Northrop, and New Haven rounded out the top five team scores. Those teams will join Homestead at the New Haven Regional next week.
