Week 3 SAC Power Rankings: Carroll, Dwenger Stay #1 and #2, Northrop Continues to Soar

#1: Carroll

Record: 2-0

Last Week: #1

Week 3: vs North Side

Dwenger has a legitimate argument for being #1 this week. However, the Chargers haven’t needed to keep their starters in for more than two quarters yet. Carroll has outscored their first two opponents 90-13 in the first half! We still have yet to see them play a “full” game yet, but that speaks to the level that this team has been playing at early.

#2: Bishop Dwenger

Record: 2-0

Last Week: #2

Week 3: vs South Side

The Saints aren’t used to having a challenge this early in the year, but they handled it very well against North Side on Friday. QB Brenden Lytle has looked poised so far, completing 62% of his passes for 284 yds and 4 TD. The defense has been stout as well, bringing lots of pressure to keep opposing quarterbacks on their heels. There is a challenging stretch of games ahead a couple weeks from now, but they’re currently sitting comfortably at #2.

#3: North Side

Record: 1-1

Last Week: #3

Week 3: at Carroll

North side suffered their first loss of the year on Friday. The Legends didn’t look quite as strong as they did against Snider, although it was tougher competition. Dwenger came up with a game plan that worked to perfection and never allowed North Side to find their rhythm on offense. The Legends have reclaimed the third spot in our rankings, though it’s because most of the teams under them have looked shaky to start the year. We’ll see if QB Duce Taylor (378 yds, 69% comp, 5 TD) and WR Jordan Turner (11 rec, 200 yds, 1 TD) can recreate some magic that they had in week 1, as they face another big time opponent in Carroll this week.

#4: Homestead

Record: 1-1

Last Week: #4

Week 3: at Luers

Homestead has been slow out of the gate in 2020. The Spartans have struggled to find any offense, only scoring 7 points in their last 6 quarters. They’ll need to rely on their playmakers a bit more, such as WR Jared Kistler and RB Braeden Hardwick, if they want to compete for a conference title this year. The defense appeared to fix itself as many important pieces came back for Friday’s game at Concordia and made a huge impact, albeit against a backup quarterback. They’ll need to continue to work things out with only one game left before they host Bishop Dwenger, or else they’ll slip in our rankings just like Snider has.

#5: Northrop

Record: 2-0

Last Week: #7

Week 3: at Wayne

Northrop has passed Snider and Concordia in our rankings this week, though they stay behind a team they beat a couple weeks ago. With Homestead missing plenty of players such as LB Luke Palmer, LB Cole Etchison, WR Ethan Chambers, WR Nate Anderson in week 1 for pandemic-related reasons, the team Northrop faced isn’t the same team that played Concordia on Friday. With that being said, RB Damarius Cowen has been on a tear and leads the SAC in rushing with 485 yards on the ground, on pace for over 2,000 yds this year. The offensive line should be given at least some of the credit for the way they’ve been able to open up holes for him, as well as how they’ve been able to protect their quarterback. The Bruins have yet to give up a sack through the first 2 games.

#6: Concordia

Record: 1-1

Last Week: #6

Week 3: at Snider

The Cadets have to be frustrated, thinking that if they had their quarterback, they could have beaten Homestead, or at least avoided getting shut out. Still, their defense should be feeling pretty good about themselves after forcing 6 turnovers on Friday. This team is sneaky good and RB Amir Drew (245 yds, 5.6 yds/car, 3 TD) has the ability to take over games when necessary.

#7: Snider

Record: 0-2

Last Week: #5

Week 3: vs Concordia

Snider continues to fall into a downward spiral after getting demolished by the Chargers. QB Deron Swanson struggled through the air again, only passing 4 for 14 with 100 yards. While many were already skeptical about the offense before the season began, no one could have expected the defense to have this much trouble to open the year. They’ve given up 1,015 yards of total offense and 89 points through only two games this year. This is an unfamiliar spot for Coach Tippmann and Snider to be in, but they’ll have to get it figured out soon with Concordia and Homestead on the schedule within the next three weeks.

#8: Bishop Luers

Record: 1-1

Last Week: #9

Week 3: vs Homestead

Luers’ win not only allowed them to switch places with Wayne, they also earned plenty of momentum heading into their game with Homestead. QB Carson Clark looked much more comfortable this week, completing 14 of his 21 passes for 261 yards and 2 TD. If he and the Knights offense can play that way in their upcoming game, they’ll have a chance to give the Spartans a scare.

#9: Wayne

Record: 0-2

Last Week: #8

Week 3: vs Northrop

Wayne couldn’t keep up with the Luers offense and have fallen to 0-2. Even then, the Generals have to like what they’ve seen from RB Shawn Collins to start the year. He has 217 yards, 9.4 yards a carry, and 1 touchdown, and will go head to head with Damarius Cowen this week.

#10: South Side

Record: 0-2

Last Week: #10

Week 3: at Dwenger

It’s been an ugly start to the year for South Side. Unfortunately, things don’t get any easier for Coach Norfleet’s team, with games against Dwenger, Snider, and Carroll in 3 of the next 4 weeks.
