Bishop Dwenger’s Vinny Fiacable has committed to play football at Indiana University. He plans to major in business. He played offensive and defensive tackle at Dwenger but expects to play offensive guard at IU.
Fiacable made his commitment public on Monday, April 6th, when he posted the news to Twitter. He chose the Hoosiers over Yale, Princeton, Louisville, Western Michigan, and others.
“The reason I went with IU is that I grew up watching them all my life,” Fiacable said. “I love IU football, it was just a good school, and it was the right fit for me. That’s why I want to go there.”
IU football is in Fiacable’s blood. His father Steve played there, as did other relatives of his. In addition to Vinny being an IU fan, those family ties helped him make his decision.
“It definitely helped because my family, they’ve all been there,” Fiacable said. “I’ve gotten the opportunity to go to a lot of games over the past few years, and I’ve always grown up and IU fan.”
The current Shelter-in-Place did not affect Fiacable’s chances to visit the campus. He’s visited IU several times and got to go on an academic visit. He’s been in contact with head coach Tom Allen as well as some of the assistant coaches for quite some time as well.
Fiacable will join a Hoosiers team that has seen improvement in recent years under Allen. Allen is entering his fourth season as head coach. After back-to-back 5-7 campaigns, Indiana went 8-5 last year; their first eight-win regular season since 1993.
“I am really looking forward to joining Tom Allen’s football team,” Fiacable said. “I’ve been a fan of them when they were 1-11, and I’ve been a fan of them when they were 8-5 this year, so [I’m happy to see] that they’re getting better, and big things are going on in Bloomington.”
Fiacable was a part of the Saints’ state championship run in 2018. He still has one more year of high school football remaining, something that head coach Jason Garrett certainly appreciates.
“Since his sophomore year, he’s played a very, very key role in our success,” Garrett said. “And as a sophomore with the state championship [followed by] last year with a new journey through 5A. I’m very much looking forward to having him back. There aren’t too many guys that can go into their senior year at Bishop Dwenger and say that they were a three-year starter, and Vinnie’s one of those guys.”
