Columbia City’s Gavin Smith is proving why he’s one of the premier playmakers in Northeast Indiana. Coming off a junior season where he earned 1st Team All-Northeast 8 and All-State honors, the free safety was a turnover machine — hauling in 8 interceptions with a staggering 33-yard average on returns, taking two to the house. He also added 4 fumble recoveries, including another score.
That momentum carried into 2025. In Friday’s 27–24 win at NorthWood, Smith once again showed his versatility: recording 6 tackles, a 56-yard pick-six, 79 return yards, and 47 rushing yards, finishing with an eye-popping 182 all-purpose yards for head coach Brett Fox.

I get subway before every game and listen to Drake in the locker room.
What’s your proudest moment in sports — and why does it stand out?
My proudest moment in sports is probably getting my first college offer because it made me realize all my hardwork had finally paid off.
What are your goals — both short-term and long-term — in your sport or beyond?
My short term goals would have to be winning a championship of some sort this year and my long term is winning a championship of some sort at the college level.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you — on or off the field?
I like watching Japanese animated shows.
