South Side basketball star Treveon Jones has committed to play college ball at Manchester University. He joins Luers forward John Peterson as one of multiple Fort Wayne athletes in Manchester’s 2020-21 freshman class. Jones plans to major in Computer Science.
“I decided to go to Manchester because of how good a school it was, the people, the way the coaches approached me, how they talked to me, [and] also all the talent that’s also going into Manchester,” Jones said. “I also love the academics that they’ve got going on. They’re very serious about their academics. And they also pushed for me. They wanted me. So, it wasn’t like I was reaching out, constantly trying to get their attention. They wanted me. And I want to be at a home where somebody wants me.”
Jones had gone to MU as part of some summer league games that South Side has played in. Aside from that, he did not get to take any in-person visits to the campus. However, he did get to participate in a virtual visit.
Manchester is coached by Nate Conley who begins his second year at the helm this school year. Before taking over at MU, he had served as an assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan and a graduate assistant at Defiance College in Ohio. Jones is very excited to play for Conley and the Spartans.
“I’ve heard great things about him, nothing but great things,” Jones said. “He’s a great coach. He’s in love with the game. He also put academics first before the sports…and I like that about him, that he’s a very strict man [and] he likes to push for academics first before anything else.”
This past season, Jones was the Archers’ leading scorer, averaging 17.3 points per game. His scoring average shot up from 8.7 points per game the previous year. During his senior year, he also averaged 5.0 rebounds per game and 1.3 steals per game.
“I’ve grown and matured in a very great way,” Jones said. “What I’m doing right now is trying to shape my game in each and every direction, and making sure that I’m good in each and every way. I like the fact that I’ve made my game very, very versatile.”
Jones has had great teammates at South Side including Kamron Mitchell, Austin Jordan, Ashton Johnson. As a junior, Jones was also teammates with JT Langston, who was the Archers’ leading scorer in the 2018-2019 season.
“I really enjoyed being teammates with those guys. I’m going to miss those guys so much” Jones said. “JT’s such a wonderful guy, humble about himself. Kam Mitchell [is] a little bit rowdy, but I always liked being around him because he was like a little brother to me. Also Ashton Johnson, Austin Jordan, they were such great guys too.”
