At this point in the spring season, celebrations are quick.
That may be how Bishop Dwenger feels, anyway. On Monday, two days after winning the SAC Boys Golf Championship, the Saints squared off with two terrific teams at the Bob Turner Classic. They played alongside Penn and Warsaw, some of their finest foes in the area and fellow State-hopefuls this season.
Eighteen holes later, at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club, Penn had shot 300, Warsaw 302, and the Saints 305. Fairly easy for Coach Dave Scudder to see how close they came to another big win.
He’s talking about Nick Holder, his number one, who fell short of the top score in his group by four whole points. A few more putts fall, Holder very easily could’ve held onto a lead in that top group.
SAC Score: 72 (T-2nd place)
Bob Turner Score: 79
Next in line was Sam Brita, another current senior who went to State with the Saints in 2019. Had Brita not bogeyed any one of his final three holes, he’d have won his group. Instead, he fell one shot shy of the score from Penn’s No. 2 man.

Dylan Olson’s SAC score was the highest among his Saints teammates, but still ranked sixth overall. That’s how dominant Dwenger was on Saturday. At the Bob Turner Classic, however, Olson was pretty handily outshot by his counterparts from both Warsaw and Penn.

Some young guys make up the final two spots. Kyle Morello, in the fourth group, is the only Saint that shot better on Monday than he did this weekend, and as a result won his group Monday night. Scudder likes what he’s seeing from Morello this time of year.

Charlie Olson is on a tear. After medaling on Saturday after shooting the SAC’s best score, including a hole-in-one on the sixth hole, he too won his group on Monday night. Very narrowly, might I add – the difference between first and third was two points. In his first year of high school golf, the sophomore is keeping his head down and grinding out some good games when the Saints need it most.

Bob Turner Score: 78
As a team, Dwenger’s shooting for the chance to shoot at the State Match for a ninth consecutive time. They have a few more tests before that, however, like Columbia City Tuesday night and 18 holes at Chestnut Hills on Wednesday. The latter course is where the Sectional match is held. Scudder says the Saints should get a good chance to learn its quirks, something they proved they can do after Monday’s performance
Combining the ability they’ve all shown, and the approach they’ve all adopted, they feel good about their momentum with the postseason popping up soon.
