Wayne football improved from 2-8 two years ago to 5-5 last year. It started with an opening-day win against Crispus Attucks, who, themselves, proceeded to go 8-2. This year’s Generals return a wealth of experience and talent.
The defense returns eight starters, including linebacker Kimar Nelson, who led the Generals in tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss. He’s joined in the linebacking corps by Jayden Busche and Bravion Queary, who are also returning starters. Busche and Queary combined for 87 total tackles last season. Defensive backs Adrian Wooten and Victur Doughty also return. Those two combined for nine interceptions a year ago.
The Generals’ backfield includes Josiah Stallings, Jacob Sharin, and Nelson. Nelson was the leader in touchdowns and total yards last year. And Stallings and Sharin carried the load well also. They each rushed for over 5 yards per carry.
Leading receiver Harold Mack returns after racking up 463 yards and 5 touchdowns. Mack also proved to be a dangerous return man. He opened the season with an 86-yard kick-return touchdown against Crispus Attucks.
Wayne will have a new quarterback this year. Basketball star Trey Dillard is the starter at this point. This is Dillard’s first year of playing high school football. He is still being evaluated, but seems to be progressing quite well.
