Bellmont’s Oliver Werling is a four-sport athlete who knows what it means to be an underdog. A standout who earned Northeast 8 All-Conference honors in both football and baseball last year, Werling continues to raise the bar. In Friday’s tough loss to Heritage, he led the Braves on both sides of the ball with 50 rushing yards, 13 tackles, and 2 tackles for loss. Who or what has had the biggest impact on your athletic journey so far?
The person who has had the biggest impact on my athletic journey has been My Dad, he taught me what discipline is and showed me what work ethic is.
What’s your pregame routine or ritual that gets you locked in?
I like to visualize myself in the sport performing perfectly, so when I go out to and play, I have my mind dialed in for my body to perform and react.
What’s your proudest moment in sports — and why does it stand out?
Sophomore year, I won backstroke at our NE8 conference swim meet, making me conference champ. I was the underdog seeded fourth to comeback to win by a landslide victory.
What are your goals — both short-term and long-term — in your sport or beyond?
My long-term goal is to be accepted into the United States Navy Academy where I am currently working through the application process. The short-term goal is to be all-conference in all my sports again this year.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you — on or off the field?
What people don’t know about me is that when I’m not actively training or playing sports, I play video games and watch Anime.
