5 to Know: South Side’s Jayvon Irby

Published on

South Side’s Jayvon Irby is making his mark as one of the Archers’ top playmakers. In Week 4 against Bishop Luers, the junior wideout put on a show with 9 receptions for 152 yards, highlighted by a spectacular one-handed, 65-yard touchdown grab that drew comparisons to Randy Moss. He added even more fireworks with a 99-yard kickoff return for a score.

The following week, Irby’s momentum carried over as South Side rolled to a 46–0 win at Wayne, securing the Archers’ first victory of the season.

A standout two-sport athlete, Irby was named 2nd Team All-SAC last year on the basketball court, where he shot 51% from the field and averaged 11 points per game. On the football field, he’s proven to be a true plug-and-play athlete, averaging 6.7 yards per carry and 13.7 yards per reception this fall for head coach Andre Goodwell.

Check out the 5 to Know with Jayvon Irby.

Who or what has had the biggest impact on your athletic journey so far?

I would say my head coach has had a big impact on my athletic journey, but my mom is the biggest.

What’s your pregame routine or ritual that gets you locked in?

To be real is just listening to music, eating something healthy, praying, and getting my heart pumping, so it’s different movements.

What’s your proudest moment in sports — and why does it stand out?

My proudest moment in my sports life is really just overcoming and getting better every year.

What are your goals — both short-term and long-term — in your sport or beyond?

My goals for the short term are, of course, just to win everything, just try to win, in any way I can, in all ways. As for the long term, I want to get something out of it, giving back, playing in college, coming back, and being a coach, being a leader, things like that.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you — on or off the field?

One thing is that I play golf, and a lot of people wouldn’t know that about me, and on the field, I can play anything.
