This matchup always has high stakes. It has, however, been a lopsided series. Homestead entered the game holding a 14-game win streak over the Chargers, with Carroll’s last win over Homestead coming in 2008. Carroll also had another bit of history against them on Friday. Homestead hadn’t lost a conference game in the regular season since joining the SAC in 2015. But none of this would matter, after the Lady Chargers won a thriller over their rival.
Carroll dictated the pace for much of the first half. Their full-court press forced multiple turnovers and never allowed Homestead to find their rhythm on offense. It wasn’t until the second half that Homestead really found their groove, behind their star center Anaya Patterson who would finish with 32 of Homestead’s 58 points on the night. An evenly played second half led us to overtime.
The Spartans got out in front in the extra period, but couldn’t put the game away at the foul line. Meanwhile, Carroll was able to do just enough to stay within striking distance. Following two more missed free throws, Carroll collected the rebound and hustled to the other end of the court. With time winding down Taylor Fordyce found her teammate Emily Parrett wide open and in-rhythm to knock down a game-tying three-pointer.
“I know I was excited,” Parrett said afterward. “But it really wasn’t just me who made that happen. It was everybody. We all worked hard, we all played great defense. So it was more of just the team playing together.”
Parrett would finish as her team’s leading scorer with 19 points and helped the Chargers put Homestead away in the second overtime period. This win cannot be overstated for coach Mark Redding’s team. This was a huge step for his young but immensely talented team and will give them loads of confidence for the rest of the year. However they’ll need the same play that they saw on Friday out of their team for their next three matchups against Northridge, Warsaw, and Concordia, all teams with winning records and capable of beating the Chargers.
On the other side, this loss is tough, but certainly not a sign of worse things to come for Homestead. They’re still easily one of the top teams in the conference and showed it on Friday. The Lady Spartans will only use this loss as motivation the rest of the way as they’ll expect to get back on track against South Bend Washington and then in the SAC against Dwenger.
Still, Carroll will enjoy this win and looks to make this a very intriguing season in girls basketball.
