Carroll has been on a tear since defeating Homestead back in December. They’ve won every game, most by double-digits, and have done so with their hounding defense and terrific three-point shooting. Friday night provided the Lady Chargers with another opportunity to show that they were the best in the SAC, as they took on South Side.
The Archers have struggled, coming into this game dropping 3 of their last 6. Having to play without their leading scorer Olivia Smith wouldn’t make things any easier on them.
Both teams came out firing and South Side was able to stay with Carroll for the first quarter. However, Carroll’s perimeter shooting proved to be too much and the Chargers pulled away in the second half. On senior night, Emily Parrett was able to turn in another impressive performance with 20 points, leading her team in that category once more.
This win will allow Carroll to improve to 6-0 in conference play, keeping them in first place as they draw nearer to a conference title. This made the win over second place South Side even more important as they will hold a tiebreaker over them in the standings.
“I like this group because of the way they play,” Coach Mark Redding said. “They play together, they play unselfish. The thing that separates us is basically how they play their defense. Our defense creates our offense. I thought the first half we weren’t focused, but I thought we came in the second half and really got it going.”
Though they came out on the losing end the Lady Archers should bounce right back, especially when Smith returns. However, in her absence South Side was able to get a key contribution from freshman Annika Davis, who led both teams with 27 points. Her play should excite this team as they look forward to sectionals.
In the meantime, Carroll will play another crucial game against Snider next Friday, but could clinch the SAC already by that time. South Side will also play important games against Concordia and Homestead in the coming days. We’ll see how the action shakes out as we enter the final week of the regular season.
Once again we’re talking about the Homestead Spartans. They’ve outdone themselves again, making 18 three pointers as a team, a school record, in their 107-61 win over North Side. 10 of those shots from deep came from Luke Goode, who set a school record himself with that stat. Every week this team seems to be getting better and there’s not much left on the conference schedule to stop them. They’ll play perhaps their toughest game of the year at Lawrence North on Saturday and beyond that only Carroll looms as a possible threat.
Speaking of the Chargers, they notched a win over South Side on Friday, although it wasn’t easy. They were challenged throughout and they were only really able to pull away late. Still, they hold the second place slot with games against Dwenger and Snider this week. We’ll learn much more about the Chargers as the SAC race begins to come into focus this week.
