ST. LOUIS – Indiana State junior Brenton Scott has been named to the Preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team as the Sycamores have been picked to finish sixth in the conference race. The preseason polls were announced this morning (Oct. 25) as part of the annual MVC Media Day held at the St. Louis City Center Hotel near the Scottrade Center. The Valley’s Preseason Poll is conducted by a vote of the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and a media panel.
Scott is joined on the Preseason All-MVC First Team by Wichita State’s Markis McDuffie, Illinois State’s MiKyle McIntosh and Paris Lee as well as Northern Iowa’s Jeremy Morgan. Morgan is the league’s preseason player of the year. On the second team are Loyola’s Milton Doyle, Missouri State’s Dequon Miller, Wichita State’s Shaquille Morris, Southern Illinois’ Sean O’Brien and Drake’s Reed Timmer.
He was named to the All-MVC Second Team as well as the NABC All-District Second Team one year ago and is the only returning member of last season’s MVC First or Second Team league-wide. As a freshman, Scott was named the MVC Freshman Of The Year. He enters his junior campaign sixth in ISU history with 135 career 3-pointers made and 11th with 331 3-pointers attempted. Last season, Scott ranked sixth in the MVC with a 14.9 ppg average while his league only average of 15.8 ppg was fourth. Scott hit 2.4 3-pointers per game to rank second while he made 2.7 trifectas per league game to rank second. His 76 3-pointers were the third most in a single season in the history of the program while his 198 attempts from long range were fourth.
Scott poured in 25 points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds in leading the Sycamores to a home victory over Illinois State before he scored a career-best 30 points as he knocked down six 3-pointers in the Sycamores’ come from behind victory over Northern Iowa. In the State Farm MVC Tournament, Scott paced the team with 14 points and recorded a career-best five steals in a quarterfinal win over Illinois State.
The Sycamores garnered 219 points in the preseason polling and are picked to finish sixth. Wichita State was selected as the preseason favorite with 37 first place votes and 413 points. In second place is Illinois State with four first place votes and 356 points. Northern Iowa took one first place vote and are in third with 348 points. Missouri State was fourth (278) and Southern Illinois was fifth (228). Behind the Sycamores are Loyola in seventh (179), Bradley in eighth (110), Evansville in ninth (106) and Drake in tenth (73).
Indiana State begins play on Thursday, November 3 when they host Rose-Hulman in an exhibition contest at 7 p.m. (ET) inside Hulman Center. The regular season begins on Friday, November 11 when they travel to Northern Illinois at 8 p.m.
