Homestead golfer Megan Yoder has committed to continue her golf career at the University of Dayton. She announced her commitment via twitter on Monday April 25th. She is undecided as far as her major is concerned, but may study either Business or Law.
“I was luckily able to visit before all the campuses shut down, and [Dayton] just seemed like a really great fit,” Yoder said. “The facilities are amazing, and the coach just made it seem like I would love it there.”
“Dayton’s coach was asking me about someone who’s a good teammate, someone who’s mentally tough, someone who takes coaching well,” Homestead girls golf coach Jeff Jehl said. “And Megan really fulfills all three of those.”
Yoder played golf and basketball at Homestead. But at this point, she plans to stick with golf at the college level instead of basketball.
“I really started to focus on golf my freshman year,” Yoder said. “I still really love [basketball], and I still enjoy playing, but I feel like golf could take me further, and I just really started to love it.”
Yoder was part of a Spartans’ team that won State this past fall. She shot 169 for the whole meet. Since she is a junior, she stands to be back for the 2020 girls’ golf campaign.
“I’ve loved playing golf at Homestead,” Yoder said. “As I said before, I really started getting into [golf] my freshman year, so freshman and sophomore year, I was still kind of a newbie. But last year being on that state championship team was such a great experience, and I can’t wait to take that experience and apply what I learned from being on such a great team at the college level.”
“She was one of our last roster spots as a freshman, but she’s improved [by about] five, six, seven, eight shots each year on her stroke average,” Jehl said. “So coaching her has just really been a pleasure because there is nothing that she’s afraid to put the work into in improving every aspect of her game.”
Dayton’s women’s golf team is coached by Sally Kosters. She has been the Flyers’ head coach for 14 years and has experience on the LPGA Tour. Under Kosters, Dayton reached the MAAC Championship Tournament in the 2014-2015 season.
“I’m really excited about [playing for Coach Kosters]. I’ve only spoken with her a few times, and then I was luckily able to meet her in person,” Yoder said. “But I just love her energy, and I love the program that she’s put together, and I really think it’s going to be a good fit for me.”
Dayton is about two hours away from Fort Wayne. Even though Yoder will not be extremely close to home when she goes to college, she won’t necessarily be too far away either.
“I think my parents really appreciate that it’s a little bit closer and that if they need me I can come home, or if they want to come visit they can,” Yoder said. “And even if we have a home tournament, or maybe some tournaments that are closer by, hopefully, they can come and watch.”
