2022 Girls Soccer State Championships at IUPUI
Class 2A Girls
Evansville Memorial (21-0-1) vs Leo (18-4) 8:15 PM ET / 7:15 PM CT
There was a first for one of our local schools competing in Semi-State at Chesterton on Saturday. That was the Leo Lady Lions winning their first Semi-State Championship in school history. It came off of a 1-0 victory over Mishawaka Marian (19-2-1). Junior Forward Madelynn Beck was the lone goal scorer for Leo, she laced in a ball that fell right to her feet off of a failed header attempt by Mishawaka Marian only 19 minutes into the ball game. But, will that be enough to defeat this undefeated Evansville Memorial squad? The Tigers are absolutely loaded with talent, they have two of the top goal scores in Class 2A, Avarie Zeller and Ella Hamner both with 22 goals on the year. Evansville Memorial got to this State Championship game by defeating Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (18-3-1) 2-0 in the Semi-State at Evansville North with goals coming from Avarie Zeller and Myla Browning. The Tigers have faced common opponents of Leo, as they defeated Carroll 3-0, and Homestead as well 3-1 earlier at the beginning of the season. This one is going to come down to talent and who wants it more. Leo has proved they have talent in all eleven players on the field, from the keeper to the midfielders. Do I think the Lions can give the defending State Champions their first loss of the year and capture the school’s first-ever state title? They’ve made it this far and I believe they have the talent to do so.
Hunter’s Pick: Evansville Memorial 0, Leo 1
Class 1A Girls
Park Tudor (20-1-1) vs Fort Wayne Canterbury (12-8-2) 6:30 PM ET / 5:30 PM CT
Canterbury defeated Andrean 1-0 in a thriller of a match on Saturday, one that came down to the wire. Both teams had many opportunities to put a goal in the back of the net, but tremendous goalkeeping kept that from happening. Going into the second overtime with less than four minutes left to go, Olivia Menor sealed the deal for Canterbury putting in a goal from 25 yards out. Meanwhile, Park Tudor defeated Evansville Mater Dei in the Semi-State at Evansville North 1-0. The Panthers won it on a free kick that was laced into the back of the net by Paige Dill from 40 yards out with just under 16 minutes left in the first half of the match. Park Tudor did defeat Canterbury earlier in the season 3-0, This one is going to come down to the battle of who is better between the pipes. The Sophomore keeper for the Cavs Sofia Carver has been on her game all postseason long only allowing 2 goals in 6 games. Meanwhile, the Panthers’ Senior keeper Lucy Furqueron has only allowed 4 goals in the 18 games she has played and has some tremendous offensive firepower in front of her. The Cavs will have to play lights out defensively to hang in this one, and I believe they have enough talent to do so.
Hunter’s Pick: Park Tudor 1, Fort Wayne Canterbury 2
