Stock, Pangiotou, Koehrn, Jimenez Propel Spartans Past Panthers

Homestead had a swim and dive meet against Snider Monday night at the Southwest Allen Natatorium.

Diving was first…and the girls’ champ was Homestead’s Sofia Jimenez…with dives like this back somersault straight…and this inward dive pike…Jimenez scored a 164.2

On the boys’ side…Snider’s Connor Mihavics took first…with dives like this reverse dive tuck…and this forward 2.5 somersault pike…Mihavics’ score was 258.15

As for swimming…the longest race of the day…was the 500-yard freestyle…on the second lap of the boys’ race…Homestead’s Demetri Panagiotou is neck-and-neck with Snider’s Ben Whitehill…he eventually takes the lead on lap three…for a while, it looked like this might be a two-man race…but later in the race Homestead’s Austin McGrogan pulls ahead of Whitehill…towards the end…McGrogan made a good push for first…but Panagiotou holds him off for the win…Panagiotou’s time was 5:29.61…over a second and a half faster than McGrogan

Another intriguing boys’ race was the 50-yard freestyle…this was a tight race between Spencer Koehrn in lane five and Jackson Burke in lane one…but it’s Koehrn who wins the race…point 16 seconds ahead of Burke…Koehrn’s time was 22.62…the Homestead boys beat Snider 132-42

The closest girls’ race of the night…was the 100-yard backstroke…and this one couldn’t have been much closer…Homestead’s Maggie Stock in lane five battles it out with fellow Spartan Audrey Crowel in lane three…they reach the finish at almost the exact same time…their times were .01 seconds apart…and Stock is the winner…with a time of 1.00.35

SOT: Maggie Stock: Junior/Homestead

Stock also took first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.03…and was part of a group that took first in the 200-yard medley relay…as a team…the Spartan girls defeated the Panthers 147-32

SOT: Justin Max: Head Coach: Fourth Season

But this night wasn’t just about winning a swim meet…Homestead recognized 13 senior swimmers…eight boys and five girls…among those seniors were Robert Benedek who is set to major in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Iowa…and Ellie Denice who will major in nursing at Indiana State…Coach Max’s advice to those seniors…would simply be this
